Every step counts: We turned 29 million steps into a bit of forest

Every step counts: We turned 29 million steps into a real forest
Earlier this year, Spring CC colleagues across the different offices and countries laced up their shoes and took part in our yearly Move Spring challenge. The result: 29 million steps taken together, one workout, walk, run, and stair climb at a time, making it the most steps taken in the history of this challenge.
But we didn't want the impact of Move Spring to stop at the finish line. As part of our sustainability agenda, we looked for a way to turn this collective energy into something lasting, and based on an input from our own initiatives, we decided to translate those steps directly into climate action.
We have purchased approximately 900 m² of forest, an investment that will help reduce net CO2 emissions by around 29 tons - 1 ton for each million steps taken. It's a fitting way to close the loop: the more we moved together, the bigger our contribution to the planet.
What makes this even more special is that the forest isn't some abstract offset far away. It's real, it's growing, and it's close by. Located not too far from Odense at a place called Holmehave a piece of proof of what Move Spring has helped achieve.
The forest is being established with more than just CO2 in mind. It has been planted with a broader purpose, covering consideration for nature and biodiversity, sustainable production and economy, CO2 storage, recreational use, hunting, and protection of drinking water. In other words, it's not offsetting, but a piece of land that will keep giving back in several ways for years to come.
This is exactly the kind of initiative we want more of where our everyday activities, big or small, translate into real, measurable action on sustainability. Move Spring showed what we can do when we move together. Now, thanks to that momentum, there's a small forest near Odense growing because of it.
And this is just one example of what can happen when a good idea gets picked up. Every step really did count. You can read more about The Danish Climate Forest Fund here and about the specific area we are invested in here (in danish).
